Creating the Identity

Nicholas Winstead has been working in the practical special effects field for over 10 years helping create creatures and characters for the LA film and TV industry. He wanted to create an identity and platform to house his own studio: Nicholas Winstead Effects.

  • NW already had a wordmark for his name that evoked the appropriate artistic energy, so I was able to approach the logo design process with a solid reference to guide me.

    I used his personal taste in art and his niche profession to inspire the moodboard and exploration, while also taking into consideration any successful existing branding within the SFX world.

  • Once the logo was designed, we immediately made some stickers and other easy merch items to see how it felt as tangible items away from the computer screen.

  • The website was a whole undertaking of its own, where we were able to utilize all the elements previously designed, and further develop the visual language of the brand.

    i.e. image treatments for showcasing work, developing a system for grouping projects for clients vs personal pieces, etc.
